Vaccines train the immune system before an infection happens, so they are tested in large numbers of healthy people and judged on safety as much as efficacy. China has a large domestic vaccine industry that now produces its own pneumococcal, HPV, influenza and shingles vaccines instead of relying on imports. The next step is broader-coverage and recombinant designs, and some programmes are being co-developed with global partners, such as SK bioscience's pneumococcal vaccine with Sanofi.
