Companion-animal gene and cell therapy

The most common heart disease in older dogs is myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD), a leading cause of heart failure in senior dogs. In Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, incidence approaches 80%.

Today's drugs only buy time. In asymptomatic Stage B2 dogs, Boehringer Ingelheim's pimobendan extended median time to heart failure, cardiac death or euthanasia to 1,228 days versus 761 days for control, 467 days longer. The indication was conditionally approved by the FDA in 2022 and announced as fully approved in January 2026, the first time the FDA has converted a conditionally approved animal-drug indication to full approval.

To stop the valve from deteriorating, the industry is betting on gene therapy. This page tracks 9 assets: 4 approved or licensed and 5 in development, 2 of them from Taiwan's Baotai Biomedical.

01 | Pet owners already pay for a monthly injection

On 13 January 2022, the FDA approved the first monoclonal antibody for animals, for osteoarthritis pain in cats. On 5 May 2023, Zoetis's Librela (bedinvetmab) was approved for dogs as a once-monthly subcutaneous injection.

The pet biologics model works: regular vet visits for an injection, paid out of pocket. Gene and cell therapies are going after the same paying owners.

02 | Licensed gene and cell products have taken the USDA route

US animal medicines have two regulators. Drugs and cell therapies go to FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM). Biologics such as vaccines and immunotherapies go to the USDA Center for Veterinary Biologics (CVB). The route determines trial design and time to market.

03 | Five assets in development: heart, joints, mouth and cancer

Heart. Rejuvenate Bio's RJB-01 uses AAV to deliver two genes, FGF21 and soluble TGF-β receptor 2. In a 17-dog pilot, 12 Cavalier King Charles Spaniels on pimobendan went about 600 days longer to progression than historical pimobendan controls, and their left atria shrank.

Joints. CureLab Veterinary's ElenaVet is a DNA plasmid encoding p62. In a 17-dog pilot, 90% met the predefined treatment-success criteria, and the company is discussing a pivotal trial with the USDA.

Mouth. Gallant's sonruvetcel is an off-the-shelf allogeneic mesenchymal stromal cell therapy for refractory feline chronic gingivostomatitis. The FDA accepted its effectiveness section in September 2025 and its target animal safety section in November 2025; as of April 2026 conditional approval was still pending.

Cancer. Baotai's PT001 is a canine melanoma immunotherapy vaccine in field trials at veterinary hospitals across Taiwan. For the same disease, Oncept has been licensed in the US for 16 years.

Big animal-health companies have arrived. In June 2026, Merck Animal Health invested in Rejuvenate Bio and signed an R&D collaboration, and the same month formed a three-way alliance with Rejuvenate Bio and Baotai.

04 | Taiwan: where Baotai stands

Baotai Biomedical (7850) obtained exclusive Asia-Pacific rights to PT401 from Rejuvenate Bio in late 2024. PT401 is a dual-gene AAV gene therapy designed to inhibit cardiac fibrosis and regulate energy metabolism to slow MMVD.

Early-stage work in Thailand and a pivotal trial in Taiwan spread the risk across two markets. Baotai cites an industry estimate that the global veterinary cardiology market will grow from US$2.7 billion in 2024 to US$6.1 billion in 2034.

The full Stage B2 approval for pimobendan sets the standard for early treatment: screen dogs before symptoms appear and treat early. The PT401 and RJB-01 field results will decide whether canine heart disease moves from "buying time" to "changing the course of disease".
